Public car parks are designed not only for everyday vehicle parking and circulation. In many public buildings, commercial developments and large residential projects, they must also connect efficiently with fire access roads, building entrance driveways and internal traffic routes.
In this project, premium natural granite cobblestones were used to create an integrated paving system for the public car park, main vehicle routes and fire access road. Rather than focusing only on stone strength, the project coordinated cobblestone dimensions, laying patterns, base construction, edge restraint and drainage according to the different traffic conditions across the site.
Project Focus: Coordinating Parking Areas and Main Vehicle Routes
The car park includes parking bays, internal driveways, turning areas and building entrances, each of which is exposed to different types of vehicle loading.
Parking bays are mainly subject to static loads from parked vehicles, while main driveways experience repeated vehicle movements. Entrance and turning areas are additionally affected by horizontal forces generated during braking and steering.
The paving structure was therefore adapted to the actual use of each area. Changes in cobblestone laying direction and subtle variations in stone colour were also used to distinguish parking bays from vehicle routes, creating a clearer spatial layout across the large paved area.
During material selection, designers and contractors can explore our granite cobblestone product range to compare different colours, dimensions and surface finishes before selecting a solution that suits both the architectural character and vehicle requirements of the project.
Fire Access Roads Designed for Actual Vehicle Requirements
The fire access road was one of the key areas requiring particular attention.
Compared with ordinary parking bays, fire and emergency vehicles are larger and heavier, placing more specific requirements on road width, turning space and pavement structure. The fire access road must therefore comply with applicable local fire regulations and the engineering requirements of the project.
Natural granite cobblestones were used as the road surface, but high stone strength alone does not mean that the complete pavement system can automatically support fire vehicle loads.
The cobblestones, base, bedding layer, joints and edge restraints were therefore considered as an integrated pavement structure, with additional attention given to stability in areas where heavy vehicles turn frequently.
Base and Edge Stability in Heavy-Duty Areas
Car park entrances, main vehicle routes and fire vehicle turning areas are among the most heavily stressed parts of the project.
If the base has insufficient bearing capacity or the pavement edges are inadequately restrained, local settlement, loosening or changes in joint alignment may occur over time even when the granite itself remains undamaged.
Construction therefore focused on base stability, surface levels, consistent joints and effective edge restraint, allowing individual cobblestones to work together with the underlying structure as a stable vehicle paving system.
Drainage Designed Together with the Paving
Large car parks also require effective stormwater management.
The project incorporated appropriate crossfalls and longitudinal gradients according to site levels, while coordinating drainage inlets, linear drainage channels and surrounding landscaped areas. This allows surface water to flow in the intended direction and reduces the risk of localised ponding in parking bays and along road edges.
The presence of joints between cobblestones does not automatically make the pavement permeable. Permeability depends on the jointing material, bedding layer, base construction and the design of the complete drainage system.
Project Result: Combining Heavy-Duty Performance with Landscape Quality
After completion, the natural granite cobblestones create a unified paving system connecting parking bays, main driveways, the fire access road and the building entrance.
Variations in laying direction and the natural tones of the granite provide clear visual definition between traffic zones while reducing the overly utilitarian appearance often associated with large hard-paved parking areas.
For public buildings, commercial developments and large residential projects, designers, contractors and procurement teams can further explore our granite cobblestone product range and select suitable dimensions and surface finishes according to vehicle types, design loads and landscape requirements.
The project was ultimately not about solving a single “stone load-bearing” issue. By coordinating the granite, base structure, joints, edge restraint and drainage as one complete system, premium natural granite cobblestones can support the long-term functional requirements of public car parks and fire access roads while maintaining the landscape quality expected in high-end developments.
