The main entrance plaza of a large stadium is not only an important architectural frontage but also a key space for spectator arrival, gathering, and rapid evacuation during sports events, concerts, and other large public events.
Compared with a conventional landscape plaza, this type of space must accommodate high pedestrian volumes within short periods while connecting ticketing and security areas, public transport, parking zones, and surrounding pedestrian routes. The paving therefore needs to address not only architectural appearance but also surface evenness, slip resistance, drainage, large-area paving stability, and long-term intensive use.
For this project, custom natural granite slabs were used throughout the stadium’s main entrance plaza and primary event evacuation areas.
Establishing a Consistent Paving Module to Reduce Irregular Cutting
The stadium forecourt covers a large area and includes building entrances, drainage channels, utility chambers, lighting foundations, and other technical elements.
If standard slab sizes are adjusted only during installation, numerous narrow pieces and irregular cuts can easily appear around boundaries and technical features.
Before fabrication, the paving layout was coordinated with the building axes, main entrances, and overall plaza dimensions. Slab sizes, joint positions, and laying directions were organized within a consistent paving module.
Special areas were detailed in advance so that the factory could produce the required dimensions according to the actual paving layout, reducing unnecessary on-site cutting.
Controlling Slip Resistance and Surface Evenness in High-Traffic Areas
After major events, large numbers of spectators may pass through the entrance plaza within a short period. Surface safety is therefore particularly important.
A suitable granite surface finish was selected for the outdoor pedestrian environment, providing appropriate slip resistance in wet conditions without creating an excessively rough walking surface.
During installation, particular attention was also given to lippage between adjacent slabs so that the main entrance and evacuation routes remained continuous and even.
For high-traffic public spaces, slab thickness, dimensional tolerances, base preparation, and installation accuracy need to be controlled as one complete system rather than evaluating individual stone pieces alone.
Integrating Drainage into the Plaza Paving
Drainage across a large entrance plaza should not depend on excessive local slopes.
The paving levels and overall falls were coordinated to guide rainwater gradually toward the linear drainage system while reducing the risk of standing water around main entrances and heavily used pedestrian areas.
Around linear drains, the slab layout was adjusted in advance so that drainage edges aligned logically with paving joints.
This improves the clarity of drainage details while reducing narrow cut pieces along the sides of drainage channels.
Detailing Utility Chambers and Lighting Foundations in Advance
Stadium plazas typically contain inspection chambers, lighting infrastructure, surveillance equipment, drainage facilities, and other mechanical or electrical elements.
Their positions were reviewed during the detailing stage and incorporated into the overall paving layout.
Where these elements could not be relocated, surrounding slab dimensions and joint positions were adjusted to keep cuts as regular as possible and reduce small fragments or irregular on-site patchwork.
Some specially sized custom granite paving slabs were numbered according to the final paving drawings, helping coordinate factory fabrication, packaging, transportation, and installation.
Keeping Evacuation Areas Simple and Continuous
The main evacuation areas avoid excessive decorative patterns. Instead, a consistent granite tone, slab scale, and regular joint layout create a clear and continuous ground surface.
This approach works well with the large architectural scale of the stadium while also supporting temporary barriers, security facilities, and crowd-management systems during major events.
For a large stadium, paving should first support safe pedestrian movement and efficient spatial organization. Its visual character should be developed around these fundamental requirements.
Project Result
The completed natural granite paving creates a continuous and stable main entrance plaza for the stadium.
Through a consistent paving module, custom slab fabrication, appropriate slip-resistant finishes, coordinated drainage, and detailed treatment of technical elements, the main entrance, evacuation areas, and infrastructure maintain a clear and organized relationship.
For stadiums, exhibition centers, and other high-traffic public buildings, successful large-area granite paving depends on more than selecting high-quality stone. Architectural scale, pedestrian movement, slab dimensions, drainage systems, and site details all need to be coordinated before fabrication begins.
By connecting design detailing, factory production, and on-site installation as one integrated process, natural granite paving can maintain its stability, clean appearance, and spatial order under long-term intensive use.
